Bethany Nowviskie

Bethany Nowviskie is Dean of Libraries and Professor of English at James Madison University, where she also serves as the institution’s Chief Academic Technology Officer. From 2015-2019, she directed the Digital Library Federation and served as a Research Associate Professor of Digital Humanities at the University of Virginia. Nowviskie has been a member of the Rare Book School faculty since 2011, was the inaugural director of the Scholars’ Lab at the UVA Library (2007-2015), and has served as past president of the Association for Computers & the Humanities and chair of the Modern Language Association’s committee on information technology. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 2004 and has worked on numerous ground-breaking projects in digital libraries and DH. In 2013, the Chronicle of Higher Education (“Ten Tech Innovators”) summed it up: “Bethany Nowviskie likes to build things.”
