Preconference: CATalyst Studios
12:30pm-4:30pm | Main Library, CATalyst Studios
People, Places and Things: how to integrate innovative library spaces with student success in and out of the curriculum
Join us for a half-day pre-conference that explores and imagines programmatic engagement with innovative library spaces. Hosted in the University of Arizona Libraries CATalyst Studios, this pre-conference features the ways CATalyst has engaged students and faculty with both curricular and extracurricular programming as a newly renovated space and service created as part of the Student Success District. Participants will explore the space and technologies within the Maker Studio, Virtual Reality Studio, Data Studio and Media Studio, with time to hear from faculty and student collaborators and ask questions. Participants will also have the opportunity to work with other attendees to plan for the future, whether planting seeds for new programming and spaces or adapting existing programmatic efforts within their own institutions.
Presenters: University of Arizona faculty, staff, and students
Preconference: Active Learning Classroom Design
12:30pm-4:30pm | Weaver Science-Engineering Library, Room 200SW
Designing and renovating classrooms for collaborative learning that meet the needs of your institution or library
As the saying goes, “It takes a village…” or rather, a committee of campus partners whose members have specific campus expertise for successful renovation and design of classrooms. At the University of Arizona, 24% of the centrally scheduled classrooms are now designed as collaborative learning spaces, including a 260-seat example in the Weaver Science-Engineering Library that served as the campus prototype and inspired the design of recent renovations to that library. These classrooms focus on collaborative, active learning across disciplines.
This half-day workshop will include a hands-on planning session to build your institutional team to 1) review current classrooms and identify opportunities for new learning spaces, 2) determine institutional demand for instructional spaces for innovative instruction and student collaboration, 3) provide faculty professional development for evidence-based instruction and collaborative learning, and 4) prepare requests to the central administration for building new classrooms and for renovation of existing classrooms. These activities can also be applied to rethinking library classroom design to support collaborative, active learning. This workshop is designed for single participants or small teams from any given institution. The presenters will discuss the process and committee structure used by the University of Arizona since 2014 to renovate and build new classrooms. The workshop will include a tour of newly renovated and new classrooms designed for different types of collaborative learning, including UA's recent Chemistry Building renovation and The Commons.
Presenters: University of Arizona faculty, administrators, a student, and a partner on the design-build team for the new classrooms in the Chemistry-Commons buildings

The Journey from Needed Change and Inspiring Ideas to the Beginning of Construction
9:30am-10:30am | Grand Ballroom, 3rd Floor, Student Union Memorial Center
Though it will be realized differently by different institutions, stewarding the vision for a major new or renovated library facility follows some common steps. The journey begins by recognizing the need for a new library, spawning inspiring ideas for needed change and envisioning new service models, while aligning with an evolving institutional mission. Then follows the process of planning and communicating the vision, securing programmatic and financial support, and gaining necessary approvals – a process that must be sustained over time and through changing mandates and administrations, even before construction begins.
